China with kids
Visa-free entry has made this straightforward again. Shanghai is the family city — a Disney park, a maglev and a riverfront — and Chengdu is the one with pandas.
Where to base yourself Pick one, or pick two and split the days between them. Each card says roughly how long it is worth and how many things there are to do.
5.5 hrs · flight Shanghai Ages 5-12 · 6D5N · 18 things to do
Shanghai Disneyland, a science museum children do not want to leave, a 430km/h maglev from the airport, and a metro that reaches all of it.
Shanghai Disneyland Maglev Science Museum
Payment is almost entirely by phone app. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly.
Things to do on Klook Add Shanghai 5 hrs · flight Chengdu Ages 5-12 · 4D3N · 16 things to do
Pandas at close range in the morning, teahouses and a very good food scene for the rest. Small enough to do properly in three nights.
Panda base Teahouses Leshan Buddha
The panda base is worth doing at opening and pointless by noon, when the animals sleep.
Things to do on Klook Add Chengdu 6 hrs · flight Beijing Ages 6-12 · 5D4N · 12 things to do
The Great Wall an hour and a half north, the Forbidden City in the middle, and a Universal Studios on the eastern edge — the most history and the most walking of any China trip.
Great Wall Forbidden City Universal Studios
Winter is genuinely cold, minus ten is normal in January, and the Wall closes sections in snow. Most major sites now need a passport at the gate and advance booking — turning up does not work.
Things to do on Klook Add Beijing 4.5 hrs · flight Shenzhen Ages 2-12 · 4D3N · 15 things to do
The closest big Chinese city to Singapore, and the one built for children — theme parks, indoor snow, and the Chimelong parks at Zhuhai and Guangzhou within a couple of hours.
Happy Valley Indoor snow Chimelong
Almost nothing here is in English, and Alipay or WeChat Pay does most of the work — set one up before you fly. Zhuhai and Guangzhou are separate cities; the metro and bridge make them day trips, not walks.
Things to do on Klook Add Shenzhen 6.5 hrs · flight, or 5 hrs by rail from Beijing Xi'an Ages 7-12 · 4D3N · 12 things to do
The Terracotta Army an hour east, a complete Ming city wall you can cycle around, and a Tang-dynasty quarter that lights up at night.
Terracotta Army City wall Muslim Quarter
The warriors are an hour out of the city and the site is mostly unshaded — go early, and read up first or a child sees three pits of broken pottery. Most people arrive by high-speed rail rather than flying.
Things to do on Klook Add Xi'an Affiliate disclosure. The “Things to do” buttons above go to Klook and earn this site a small commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. They do not affect which destinations are listed or what is written about them.
When to go. Shanghai is best April to May and September to November. Chengdu is mild but grey; the panda base is good all year.
Choose where you are staying, then pick from what is reachable from there and the app builds a day-by-day plan around it.
