The Little Hours

Türkiye with kids

A direct flight to a country that is two holidays at once — Istanbul's mosques and cisterns at one end, and cave hotels, balloons and a Mediterranean coast full of theme parks at the other.

Where to base yourself

Pick one, or pick two and split the days between them. Each card says roughly how long it is worth and how many things there are to do.

Istanbul

Two continents, a strait full of ferries, and more paid attractions than the rest of the country combined — from a sixth-century basilica to an aquarium in a shopping centre.

The historic sites are genuinely crowded and skip-the-line tickets are not a luxury here. Hagia Sophia now charges foreign visitors a separate fee from worshippers, so check what your ticket actually covers.

Cappadocia

Ages 6-12 · 4D3N · 9 things to do

Rock valleys carved into houses, churches and whole underground cities, with a few hundred balloons going up at dawn most mornings.

Balloons at dawnUnderground citiesCave hotels

Balloons fly at sunrise or not at all, and are cancelled for wind more often than operators admit — leave two mornings free if it matters. The underground cities involve stooping through narrow tunnels and are not for the claustrophobic.

Antalya

Ages 4-12 · 6D5N · 11 things to do

The Mediterranean resort coast, with the biggest theme park in the country, an aquarium, waterfalls in the middle of town, and Roman theatres still used for performances.

Most of the coast runs on all-inclusive resorts, and the good attractions are spread across an hour's drive — check what your hotel includes before booking tickets separately.

Add Antalya

When to go. April to June and September to October. July and August are 35°C on the coast and the Cappadocia balloons fly at dawn regardless. Winter in Istanbul is cold and wet but the queues disappear.

Choose where you are staying, then pick from what is reachable from there and the app builds a day-by-day plan around it.

Türkiye — good to know

Detail
EntrySingapore passport holders do not need a visa for short stays. Check the current rule before booking — it has changed more than once.
TimeFive hours behind Singapore. An evening arrival and a lost first morning is the usual pattern.
MoneyTurkish lira, and inflation has been high for years — prices in guidebooks go stale fast. Cards are taken almost everywhere; carry some cash for markets.
Getting aroundDomestic flights are cheap and frequent, which is how most people get between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast. Istanbul itself is best done on public transport, not by taxi.
DressMosques require covered shoulders and knees, and women cover their hair — scarves are lent at the door. This applies to children old enough to notice, and it is worth explaining before you arrive.
FoodMild by regional standards and very child-friendly — bread, grilled meat, rice, yoghurt. Fussy eaters do well here.
EarthquakesThe country sits on an active fault system. Hotels in the main tourist areas are built to code; it is worth knowing where the stairs are.
WaterBottled water is the norm even where the tap supply is treated.
