A speedboat up the mangrove at dusk for monkeys, crocodiles and monitor lizards. Twenty minutes from the centre and the best hour in Brunei.
Ages 6-12
Gold dome, marble minaret and a stone barge in a lagoon. Non-Muslim visiting hours are limited — check the day's times first.

The Sultan's coronation chariot, jewelled crowns and a wall of state gifts. Free, air-conditioned and shoes off at the door.
Ages 4-12
A once-lavish royal funfair now half its old size, cheap, and rarely busy. Evenings only on most days.

A short jungle walk to a waterfall and a playground, ten minutes from the centre. Free, and the only green space in easy reach.

A longboat up river then an aluminium tower into the canopy. A full day, several hundred steps, and worth it from about eight.

Morning market by the river for ambuyat, kuih and grilled fish. Everything is halal, which makes this the simplest country here for families who need it.
