Malaysia with kids
The cheapest proper holiday in range, and the only one you can reach without an airport. Johor Bahru is an overnight; Kuala Lumpur and Penang are a flight barely longer than the drive to Changi.
Where to base yourself Pick one, or pick two and split the days between them. Each card says roughly how long it is worth and how many things there are to do.
30-90 min · car or bus Johor Bahru Ages 2-12 · 2D1N · 20 things to do
The closest thing to a day trip abroad. Legoland and its water park are the draw, with Sea Life next door and an indoor park as the wet-weather backup.
Legoland Sea Life Water park
Queues at both causeways on Friday evenings, Sunday nights and every school holiday. Cross before 7am or after 9pm.
Things to do on Klook Add Johor Bahru 2.5-3 hrs · car Desaru Coast Ages 4-12 · 3D2N · 9 things to do
Beach resorts on Johor's east coast with a genuinely large water park attached, plus an ostrich farm and a fruit farm for the day you are not swimming.
Adventure Waterpark Beach Ostrich farm
A long drive after the border. Three nights, not two, or most of it is car.
Things to do on Klook Add Desaru Coast 3.5 hrs · car or coach Melaka Ages 6-12 · 3D2N · 15 things to do
A river cruise, Dutch colonial squares, a submarine museum and trishaws covered in fairy lights. The one that rewards children old enough to walk around a town.
River cruise Trishaws Jonker Street
Jonker Street's night market is Friday to Sunday only. Midweek misses the point of it.
Things to do on Klook Add Melaka 1 hr · flight Kuala Lumpur Ages 4-12 · 4D3N · 31 things to do
A city break barely longer than getting to Changi. Aquaria, the bird park and Sunway Lagoon between them cover four days without needing the weather to cooperate.
Aquaria KLCC Bird park Sunway Lagoon
Traffic is worse than the map suggests. Stay near an LRT or MRT station.
Things to do on Klook Add Kuala Lumpur 1.5 hrs · flight Penang Ages 6-12 · 5D4N · 15 things to do
A walkable UNESCO old town with street art to hunt for, a funicular up a hill, the best food in Malaysia, and the world's longest water slide half an hour north.
Street art Penang Hill Escape Penang
The beaches are not the reason to go — Batu Ferringhi is murky and jellyfish are common.
Things to do on Klook Add Penang 1.5 hrs · flight Langkawi Ages 4-12 · 5D4N · 14 things to do
Duty-free island with calm west-coast beaches, a cable car up a limestone ridge and mangrove boat tours. The beach half of Malaysia that Penang is not.
SkyCab Mangroves Cenang Beach
Wettest August to October, and the sea gets murky with it. Ferries from Penang are long and rough with children.
Things to do on Klook Add Langkawi 2.5 hrs · flight Kota Kinabalu Ages 5-12 · 5D4N · 10 things to do
Borneo without the effort: five islands twenty minutes offshore, proboscis monkeys and fireflies up a river at dusk, and a mountain in the background of everything.
Island hopping Proboscis monkeys Mari Mari
The islands are a boat ride, and the sea gets choppy from November to February. Book the early departure — the water is calmest before noon.

When to go. Dry-ish all year. The east coast is wettest November to February; the west coast is fine year round.
