New Zealand with kids
Two islands, a hire car and not much traffic — the easiest long-haul driving holiday there is, with geysers and glowworms on one island and fiords and glaciers on the other.
Where to base yourself Pick one, or pick two and split the days between them. Each card says roughly how long it is worth and how many things there are to do.
10.5 hrs · direct flight Auckland Ages 4-12 · 5D4N · 14 things to do
The arrival city, with an aquarium and a tower in the middle and Hobbiton and the Waitomo glowworm caves within a two-hour drive south.
Hobbiton Waitomo caves Sky Tower
Hobbiton and Waitomo are both about two hours away and in slightly different directions — pick one per day, or take a tour that does both and accept a very long one.
Add Auckland 3 hrs · drive from Auckland Rotorua Ages 3-12 · 4D3N · 14 things to do
Geysers, bubbling mud and hot pools in the middle of town, with Maori culture told first-hand and more things for children to roll down hills in than anywhere else in the country.
Te Puia geysers Zorbing Maori culture
The whole town smells of sulphur. It is harmless, you stop noticing it after a day, and a child should be warned before the car door opens.
Add Rotorua 2 hrs · flight from Auckland Queenstown Ages 6-12 · 6D5N · 15 things to do
Mountains straight out of a lake, Milford Sound a long day west, and the country's adventure capital — most of which has a gentler version for families.
Milford Sound Lake Wakatipu Ski fields
Milford Sound is four hours each way by road and the tours leave before dawn. It is worth doing once, and it is a very long day for a child under about six.
Add Queenstown 1.5 hrs · flight from Auckland Christchurch Ages 4-12 · 5D4N · 13 things to do
A flat, rebuilt city with two wildlife parks, punting on the river, and the Kaikoura whales and Tekapo's dark skies within a couple of hours.
Orana Wildlife Park Kaikoura whales Lake Tekapo
The city is still visibly rebuilding from the 2011 earthquake and Quake City tells that story plainly — worth preparing an older child for, and probably skipping with a younger one.
Add Christchurch 1 hr · flight from Auckland Wellington Ages 6-12 · 3D2N · 4 things to do
A small capital with two attractions that justify the stop on their own: the national museum, which is free, and the workshop that built Middle-earth.
Te Papa Weta Workshop
The thinnest stop on this list — two or three days at most, usually taken on the way between islands. Famously windy, and the Cook Strait ferry is often rough.
Add Wellington When to go. December to March is summer and the warmest, and also the busiest and dearest. Shoulder months are quieter and still fine. July and August are ski season on the South Island and cold everywhere else.
Choose where you are staying, then pick from what is reachable from there and the app builds a day-by-day plan around it.
Auckland 10.5 hrs · direct flight · Ages 4-12 · 5D4N · 14 things to do. The arrival city, with an aquarium and a tower in the middle and Hobbiton and the Waitomo glowworm caves within a two-hour drive south.

Book on Klook New Zealand — good to know Detail Entry NZeTA required in advance for Singapore passport holders, applied for online. It takes up to 72 hours, so do not leave it to the airport. Time Four to five hours ahead of Singapore depending on daylight saving. A rare long-haul trip with almost no jet lag. Money New Zealand dollar. Cards everywhere, including in small towns. Tipping is not expected. Getting around Hire a car — the country is built for it and the roads are quiet. Child seats are compulsory to age seven and hire firms charge daily. Distances take longer than the map suggests because the roads wind. Biosecurity Taken seriously. Declare all food, and clean any hiking boots before you fly — undeclared items carry an instant fine. Sun The UV here is among the strongest in the world even when it feels cool. Hats and sunscreen are not optional, especially on the South Island. Health Free emergency accident cover for visitors through ACC, but not illness — travel insurance still needed. Water Tap water is safe everywhere.
