Haze this weekend: ten indoor plans for the family

The haze looks set to hang around into the weekend. Here are ten places from Explore where little ones can still run, climb and wonder, all under a roof.

Impasto painting of a family stepping in from a hazy day through tall glass doors, two small children running ahead towards a colourful indoor play space

If you've spent the week glancing at the sky and then at the PSI, you're in good company. NEA's forecast for Friday was Unhealthy to Low Very Unhealthy, and at 1pm today the 24-hour PSI was between 121 and 155, still in the Unhealthy range. The winds are still carrying smoke over from Kalimantan, so it makes sense to plan the weekend indoors.

A weekend under a roof doesn't have to mean a weekend on the sofa, though. We've picked ten places from Explore that we'd happily spend a hazy Saturday in, sorted by who they suit best.

For the little ones

Art you're meant to touch

An arts play space at One Holland Village where the installation changes every few months, made by artists rather than playground firms. It's calm and tactile, which is just what a cooped-up toddler needs. Entry is by timed slot, from 9.15am at weekends, and costs $12 a child and $10 an adult, so it's worth pre-booking.

Free, for now

Here's the bargain of the weekend. The Level 2 exhibition closed on 28 September while the museum gets ready for something new, so until 12 November only Level 1 is open, and it's free. Entry still runs in timeslots, so have a look at the museum's ticketing page before you set off.

A whole floor of stories

A dedicated children's floor, cosy story corners and free weekend programmes, open 10am to 9pm every day. Bring a big bag: going home with a stack of new books is half the fun of a library morning.

A supermarket, a cockpit and a dig pit

KidsSTOP is the under-eights wing, with a mini supermarket, a flight simulator and a dig pit. It runs two sessions a day, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. The main Science Centre, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, will keep older siblings busy for hours.

The old S.E.A. Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa, now expanded and renamed. One enormous viewing panel holds even toddlers still for a good while, and the whole visit is indoors and cool.

Three near-complete dinosaur skeletons and a whale hanging overhead. It's small enough to do in a morning and a sure hit with anyone in a dinosaur phase. It's closed on Mondays, so this one is for Saturday or Sunday.

A cool spring day under glass

Nine gardens under one glass roof, kept cool all day, and calmer than the Cloud Forest next door. It's open 9am to 9pm daily, last entry 8.30pm. The walk over from Bayfront MRT is in the open air, so on a bad-air day a drop-off at the door is kinder.

A waterfall that costs nothing

Watching the Rain Vortex is free, and you can reach it from Changi Airport MRT without stepping outside. Canopy Park's mazes and bouncing nets, up on the top level, are ticketed if you'd like more than the waterfall.

Up the wall, no ropes to learn

Auto-belay walls mean nobody needs a climbing partner or any rope skills, and the staff will have a first-timer up the wall in about ten minutes. It's at Kallang Wave Mall, open 9am to 9pm at weekends, for climbers aged four and up.

Chocolate they made themselves

A bean-to-bar workshop at Dempsey where children make their own chocolate bar and take it home. Weekend slots go early and hours can change, so book before you promise anyone chocolate. Under-fives join in with a grown-up.

Before you head out

  1. Peek at the air first

The 1-hour PM2.5 on haze.gov.sg or the myENV app is the right-now number. The sky can look fine and still not be.

    Check the air now
  2. Go door to door

Most of these are a short hop from a car park or MRT. On a Very Unhealthy day, a drop-off at the entrance beats a walk in the open.

  3. Book the timed slots tonight

Rainy and hazy weekends fill the same places at once. A slot booked the night before saves a disappointed queue.

Here's to clearer skies by next weekend. Until then, stay cosy, and save the playground for when the blue comes back.
